The short, yet fascinating, recorded history of El Cajon begins with the area as an agrarian heartland in the 1800's. Due to a scarcity of recorded history for the area, there is no widely accepted date for a permanent settlement in the area, though it is known that mission padres were drawn to the area while exploring for land ideal to support the mission's cattle as well as the cattle of Native American converts.
With secularization the governor of California, Pio Pico, confiscated the lands of Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1845 and granted the land forming El Cajon and several surrounding communities. At this time the area was characterized by scattered adobe homes which may or may not have housed permanent residents. In 1870 a school was established in a homestead at Park and Magnolia. This is the earliest decisive time marker for a permanent American settlement in the city.
During the latter part of the nineteenth century it was discovered that the climate and soil conditions were advantageous to the support of many crops. As the agriculture of the area expanded from primarily wheat to include citrus, avocados, and grapes, the real estate "pitch" of the day enticed its clients to the area with the idea of having the perfect environment for the drying of raisons.
Growth of the area was markedly increased both after the Civil War and World War II. El Cajon has experienced enormous growth in the latter part of the twentieth century. In 1960 El Cajon's population had increased to 37,618, and spanned an area of 9.8 square miles. By 2000 that had increased to 14.6 miles and a population of 94,869, a growth which continues to be handled by civic leaders with great care and responsibility. This has successfully created a lovely city and a community that its residents are proud and pleased to call home.
